Although mother nature is incredibly gorgeous, she can be unpredictable and dangerous too. Of course life jackets on board are the law for many types of water activities, but having your own personal vest along when it isn't the law means being safe instead of sorry. Even the strongest swimmer can quickly run out of steam trying to stay afloat under their own power out in deep lakes, rivers with currents and in the ocean.
This brings me to a very sad and tragic example. My own ex-husband drowned trying to swim from one bank of a seemingly placid river to the other side. He was one of those people who loved rafting and being out on the water, but he wasn't a prolific swimmer.
Although the river looked as smooth and calm as glass, there was a hidden undertow. The county had posted signs that no swimming was allowed in that area. He ignored the warning and his body surfaced down stream a few days later. He might be alive today if he had been wearing a life vest, I don't know. The undertow grabbed him and took his life.
Water is so tricky. People panic and begin struggling during an emergency. Having a flotation device lets you relax and conserve energy. Even wearing the very best Coast Guard approved device doesn't compare to using common sense at all times when out in natural water. Mother Nature is to be respected.
